Our international trip to Hawaii is a fun-filled summer adventure camp for students aged 8-12. It takes place on the beautiful islands of Maui and Hawaii. In summer 2018, our students rode a submarine 100 feet under the sea and hiked above the clouds at 10,000 feet at Haleakala National Park. They became junior park rangers, taking an oath to protect the wildlife and environment at parks like Pu'uhonoua O Honaunau as well as parks closer to home like Yangmingshan. They studied types of reef fish in our custom-made Hawaii handbook, then saw them up close while snorkeling at Molokini Crater and Kealakekua Bay. They searched for sea turtles on beaches and birds in the air. At night, they found constellations in the night sky, tracked the phases of the moon, and used a telescope to get a closer look at individual moon craters. Students experienced for the first time what it's like to camp under the stars, surf in the ocean, and take charge of their own Hawaiian adventure.
We believe our trip to Hawaii allows young people to discover and explore a world beyond the shores of Taiwan. The trip is filled not only with adventure, but also opportunities to learn. At BigByte, we feel strongly that students need to step out of their comfort zones, and that they need to feel challenged. That is why a lot of our activities require participants to rely on their own problem-solving skills. We encourage the participants to have an independent mindset, where they make their own decisions and take ownership of their actions. We’d like to embolden them to not only become more self-reliant, but also more responsible for their own thoughts and deeds.
